Die Aare ist der wasserreichste Nebenfluss des Rheins, noch vor dem Hochrhein selbst, und sie führt mehr Wasser als Mosel und Main zusammen. Das Einzugsgebiet der Aare umfasst 17'709 km² am Alpennordhang und im Mittelland.
