Sie ist darüber hinaus ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel im Deutsch-Belgischen Naturpark Hohes Venn. Mit dem Bau der Staumauer wurde 1936 begonnen, durch politische und kriegsbedingte Verzögerungen konnte die Talsperre jedoch erst 1950 fertiggestellt und eingeweiht werden.
