Er hat, wie der Sämtisersee, einen unterirdischen Ablauf, und sein Wasser tritt ebenfalls im Rheintal wieder zutage. Er ist der drittgrösste Bergsee des Schweizer Kantons Appenzell Innerrhoden. Seine maximale Tiefe beträgt 31 Meter.
