Der 21 Hektar große Steinsee liegt rund 23 Kilometer östlich von München auf dem südwestlichen Gebiet der oberbayerischen Gemeinde Moosach. Er ist etwa 11 Meter tief und der zweitgrößte See sowie der größte Badesee im Landkreis Ebersberg.
